My father and me, Turnbull, Alabama

GARRETT HARDEE

I was raised to be a steward of the land.

I am the sixth generation of my family to manage a cattle, horse, and timber operation in south Alabama.  My parents Philip and Lynne Hardee taught my sister Caroleene and me that cultivating and nurturing our land is a privilege and a duty.  They continue to show us how to respect the delicate balance between agriculture and land conservation. I love my family and history; inevitably, I could not help but love ranching.

After graduating from University of Texas at Austin in Plan II Honors, I attended Yale School of Architecture, where I obtained my master’s degree in architecture.  I returned to the south and joined McAlpine House. Working for an architecture firm that values the poetry and heritage of a place has allowed to me design using the same principles that my parents taught me.

Finding a way to expose an increasingly urban world to the importance of the agriculture industry is important to me. I hope these pieces encourage reflection on a part of our collective history and the people who still honor those traditions.
